“It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
I love stories, both real and fictional, about reluctant leaders. In Megan Whalen Turner’s teen Thief series Eugenides (Gen) becomes not only a reluctant leader but eventually a reluctant king. Besides being a rip-roaring and exquisitely written and plotted series, there is much to take away about leadership. Gen is smart, talented at strategic planning, adept at reading people, secretive when he needs to be, and, always important…astute at getting himself out of trouble! Many of us see ourselves as reluctant leaders, but when we stop to think about the many ways in which we do lead, we can be inspired to embrace our inner leader and grow.
